What if I have no previous experience in ‘sociogenomics’ or working with genetic data?
That is no problem since the aim of this course is to introduce students to this emerging multidisciplinary approach.
What kind of previous skills and knowledge should I have before applying?
We expect participants to have a basic knowledge of:
Statistics (Descriptive Statistics; OLS)
Data (Measurement and Data Management)
Mathematics (Calculus; Linear Algebra; Matrix Algebra)
Computing (sound knowledge statistical packages such as R). Those without sufficient experience in R are still encouraged to apply and if accepted should follow an on-line tutorial in advance.
I don’t have previous experience working with the computer program R. Will this be a problem?
Those without sufficient experience in R are still encouraged to apply and if accepted should follow an on-line tutorial in advance.
When will I know whether my application has been accepted?
The deadline for applications is March 30, 2017. Our aim to let participants know the outcome as soon as possible within approximately 2 weeks.
I received an email that accepted me for this course and asked me to confirm that I will attend. What happens if I don’t respond?
Once we have allocated places on the course, we ask individuals who have been allocated a place on the course to confirm that they will indeed be participating within two weeks of the receipt of the email. We ask for you to confirm your attendance so that, if you can no longer come, we are able to offer your place to someone on the waiting list. If we do not receive your confirmation, we will offer your place to someone else.
I need to cancel my registration – how do I do this?
Contact our SOCGEN administrator Yolandi Muller (Yolandi.email@example.com) as soon as possible to cancel your registration.
If you have been accepted to the course and have not yet paid before the payment deadline, your attendance will be cancelled. If we have received your payment, we will only be able to provide a refund if your course place is filled by another participant or in very extenuating circumstances.
Payment and Funding
How do I pay for the course?
Is there any funding or scholarships to pay for the summer school?
Yes. A limited number of scholarships are available. Applicants to the Summer School are eligible to apply to the NCRM Training Bursaries, which are up to £500 each. The goal of these scholarships is to improve the quality and range of methodological approaches used by UK social scientists. In the spirit of this, when allocating the bursaries, priority will be given to training in advanced and/or new methods. Please note that under current NCRM criteria, PhD and Master students are not eligible for these scholarships.
For this summer school, the relevant application period is: 9am 27th March – 5pm 31st March
For eligibility criteria, please refer to the NCRM Training Bursary page: http://www.ncrm.ac.uk/TandE/bursary/
Only students who have been selected to attend the summer school by the course organizers will be admitted, regardless of their scholarship outcome.
Visa Applications for Travel to the United Kingdom
I will need a visa letter to travel to the summer school. How can I arrange this?
Please let us know that you need a visa letter when you fill in the registration form. We will ensure that letters are issued quickly; unfortunately, we cannot issue them without first receiving payment from you. If you are offered a place, prompt payment of course fees will ensure that you have as much time as possible to secure your visa.
You may find the government visa website useful for more information on applying for a visa (for example, information on the average time it takes to get a response for a visa).
Will my course fee / accommodation fee be refunded if I do not get a Visa for the UK?
If we are able to fill your place on the course then we will be pleased to refund your course fee. However, if you cancel late and/or we are unable to fill your place then we regret that we would be unable to refund your course fee.

Do I need to bring a lap top?

Individuals who are unable to work on their own laptop are encouraged to contact us to discuss other alternatives at: Yolandi.firstname.lastname@example.org.
